Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda DOP is grown in the province of Potenza , within the Pollino National Park. These lands is characterized by their position, their nice features, the cleanness of waters streaming from sources within the park itself and by a fair climate.
Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda does not originally come from Italy. In fact, Solanum Aethiopicum – this is its scientific name – is native of Eastern Africa, and came to Italy along with the Rotonda citizens returning home from the Ethiopian War.
Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda DOP looks more like a tomato than other varieties of eggplant. The color can be green or orange at the beginning of maturation and is intense orange tending to red when fully ripe. The flesh is plump and does not becomes dark after being cut! The scent is intense and fruity, with notes of prickly pear.
Colors and scents of dishes made with Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda remind of the Pollino landscapes. It is worth noting that, when fully ripe, it has a piquant and slightly bitter aftertaste, so it is better used when it is still unripe, orange colored, with green highlights.
